Troupe Scala
Russian Bar and
Teeterboard
Performing
for the first time in America at Ringling
Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents DRAGONS, Troupe Scala showcases a mixed act full of high-flying
skills with energy and pizzazz. This elite group of acrobats from Havana, Cuba,
graduated from the prestigious Cuban National Circus School. Although their
comprehensive studies included eccentric comedy, aerial, clowning, and
acrobatics, each member eventually found a passion for being part of a group
that executes incredible mid-air stunts on the Teeterboard and Russian Bar.
Troupe Scala
was founded by Jorge Guerra who assembled his original group while in circus
school. “I built this group,” says Jorge, “because this is my love, performance
is my love.”
Today’s
diverse group includes a father-and-son pair; Jorge’s two relatives, an uncle
and a cousin; two women; and eight men, who collectively have 80 years of
experience. “My uncle Ricardo is my mentor,” Jorge says. “He has performed all
over the world. To be here in America with some of my family, we all realize
how special that is.”
But for
Troupe Scala, being related by blood isn’t the only way to be family. A
tight-knit group, each member regards the others as family. They live, practice
and perform gravity-defying stunts together, so they have an unequivocal trust
for one another. “We are family, in and out of the ring,” confirms Jorge. “The
girls in the troupe, they are our sisters, and we will do anything to keep them
safe; even if that means one of us has to face an injury, as long as the girls
are safe. That’s what matters.”

“When I was
young, I’d hear stories, we’d all hear stories about Ringling Bros.® We would have to wait for our friends
and family to come back from touring. They would bring us photos and other
items they collected while in the United States. It was amazing to see these
things, to hear their stories. I knew as a young child that the ultimate goal
was to be part of Ringling Bros.,”
confesses Jorge.
Now that the members of Troupe Scala have
reached the pinnacle of their career, what do they plan on doing while
traveling throughout America? Exploring! “We’ve heard so many stories about
Niagara Falls while living in Cuba, so we are very excited to visit it,” offers
Jorge. “The Statue of Liberty, Las Vegas and New York City are also on the
list.”
