    IT'S A BOY!
RINGLING BROS. WELCOMES FIFTEENTH ASIAN ELEPHANT
BORN IN RACE TO SAVE THE SPECIES

Alana and calf May 23, 2002 - In a race against the ravages of nature and time, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Center for Elephant Conservation (CEC) in Polk County, Florida, is thrilled to announce the birth of a healthy, 270-pound male Asian elephant calf. He is the fifteenth calf to join our herd in a ten-year-old breeding program and the unprecedented fifth birth in just 13 months.

The 32-year-old mother, Josky, delivered the calf at the CEC at 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2002, and he will be named P.T. in honor of the love affair that started between Americans and Asian elephants when P.T. Barnum began touring The Greatest Show On Earth®. This new baby takes us one step farther from extinction of the species, since fewer than 40,000 Asian elephants are left in the world.

As Josky's fifth calf, the little elephant joins half-siblings Asha, Rudy, Gunther and Sara who were born at the CEC between April 2001 and March 2002. These births highlight the CEC's record as one of the most successful Asian elephant conservation programs in the world and a vital link to the species' future.

Since the early 1990s, more than 30 percent of the viable Asian elephant calves born in North America were born through the Ringling Bros. Asian elephant conservation program and represents more births than all other facilities combined in the U.S. in the same time period. Ringling Bros. cares for the largest and most diverse gene pool outside of Southeast Asia with a herd of close to 70 elephants between Florida and the two touring units of The Greatest Show On Earth®.

The Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation (CEC) was founded by Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®, to keep Asian elephants alive for future generations. Built in 1995, this 200-acre, state-of-the-art facility was designed for the conservation, breeding, scientific study and retirement of the Asian elephant. Ringling Bros. continues to share its knowledge with veterinary and scientific communities worldwide. Also, with our expanding program to provide companion Asian elephants to U.S. zoos when needed and our cooperative efforts in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia, Ringling Bros. continues its commitment to the survival of this magnificent species. Please explore the links at the top of this page to learn more about the CEC.
