    Elephant Rescue
    in Sumatra: A Diary

The Largest Gene Pool Outside Southeast Asia
"A concerted effort to save the Asian elephant is imperative. Zoos are doing their best with the resources they have, but most can't afford to maintain a large breeding group of elephants. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Center for Elephant Conservation is dedicated to saving the Asian elephant and has both the resources and the commitment to succeed."
---Jack Hanna, Director Emeritus, Columbus Zoo

"The elephant has always been a symbol of The Greatest Show On Earth®. The Center will ensure that people will be able to experience the joy and wonder of Asian elephants up close and personal for generations to come."
---Feld Entertainment Chairman and CEO Kenneth Feld

The elephants at the Center for Elephant Conservation and the animals performing with the two units of The Greatest Show On Earth constitute the largest, most diverse gene pool of Asian elephants outside of Southeast Asia.

The Asian elephants at the Center are cared for in an environment that emphasizes security, comfort, and health for these magnificent animals. When the 200-acre Center opened in December 1995, the facility was home to 27 elephants, including four breeding males and six offspring. Since then, there have been many remarkable moments that have made the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey family as proud as can be!

Take January 1, 1996, for example. The new year meant a new offspring as KellyAnn was born at the Center. Weighing in at a healthy 188 pounds and 12 ounces, and born to parents Sally and Vance, KellyAnn measured 36 inches high and 39 inches long at birth!
