Gunther's Greatness: A Timeline

1990: On November 18, Gunther gives his last appearance in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Greatest Wild Animal Trainer of All Time assumes a management position as Vice President of Animal Care.
1991: Gunther utilizes his unique animal expertise to counsel zoological parks, young trainers and animal breeders. He oversees the care and treatment of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey menagerie and is in the forefront of the Circus' aggressive animal welfare program.
1994: Gunther returns to the ring to star in the CBS-TV special The Return of Gunther Gebel-Williams and a limited number of in-person performances with The Greatest Show On Earth.
1995: Gunther is inducted into the Madison Square Garden Walk of Fame in 1995 for holding the record for most performances by any entertainer in the famous arena.
1998: January. Gunther is honored by being named Circus Celebrity of the Year by the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida.

September. Gunther steps into the tiger cage in Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana, and in the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to enable his son, Mark Oliver, to return to their Venice, Florida, home to be with his wife and fellow performer, Cristina, as they await the birth of their first child, Hunter. Gunther's last circus performance was on September 27.

1999: July 24. Gunther Gebel-Williams is inducted into the International Circus Hall of Fame in Peru, Indiana.

Gunther serves as Grand Marshal of the 40th annual Circus City Festival Circus Parade in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, an event that draws more than a million people.

2001: July 19. Gunther Gebel-Williams dies in his home in Venice, Florida, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.
